Cowboys WR Gallup set to play on Thursday after death of brother

Dallas rookie wide receiver Michael Gallup received the devastating news of his brother's death after Sunday's game, but he is set to play this week.

Gallup was informed of his brother's death at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. He remained in Georgia with his family before returning to Texas on Tuesday.

Gallup was in meetings and the team's walk-through on Wednesday and has every intention of playing on Thursday, ESPN reported.

He has not spoken to the media since the tragedy, but broke his silence on Twitter, thanking his team-mates, friends and fans for their support.

"I want to thank my team-mates, the Cowboys family, friends & fans for their love and support," Gallup wrote.

"It means so much that y'all are here for me and my family during this time."

Coach Jason Garrett said on Wednesday the organisation is sensitive to how challenging this is for Gallup and his family.

"Well, I think all of these situations are unique,'' Garrett said, via the Dallas Morning News. "The individual is unique, the circumstances, so I don't know that there is a blanket statement that you can make.

"I do think for all of us as we go through challenging things that getting back to routine and structure typically can help us. But we're certainly sensitive to where he's been the last few days and how challenging a time this is for him and his family.''

Quarterback Dak Prescott also offered his sympathies and support, looking back on the game he played after the loss of his mother five years ago. In college, Prescott's mother died after a long battle with colon cancer, and the following week he faced Texas A&M.

"I know how the game helped me out," Prescott said, via ESPN. "It just brings peace and allows me to go out there and be with a group of guys who you know have your back and almost get away from that. My heart is heavy for him. Don't wish that upon anybody obviously. It's not something you can plan to deal with or say football is going to help you deal with it when the time comes.

"But I just hope he knows we're all behind him and we all support him and we're going to be there for him."

The Cowboys will host the Washington Redskins on Thursday.
