Twins slugger Sano still not close to 100 per cent

15 mai 2018 01:37

Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano has been out of action since late April with a left hamstring strain and is still not fully recovered.

Sano has played 20 games this season, batting .213 with five home runs and 14 RBIs, but he has been running and taking grounders, indicating a possible return or rehab assignment is near.

"He's still a little tentative, for me, in how he's going about it. I don't know how you would judge the level of effort he's giving on some of the running he's doing. But to me, it's not very close to 100 per cent," manager Paul Molitor said on Monday, via the Star-Tribune.

"The swing's fine, he looks pretty good taking grounders, but those hamstrings, to practice and try to get ready to compete in a game and then be able to sustain for nine innings for multiple days consecutive, that's a challenge with that type of injury."

The Twins are two games below .500 entering Monday but with Eduardo Escobar playing well at third base and batting .282 with seven homers and 20 RBIs, Minnesota have the luxury of not rushing Sano back into the lineup.

"I'm hoping we have a good week here and we can think about getting him into a game sometime, sooner than later, somewhere," Molitor said. "But I'll watch him today, tomorrow, and hopefully we get a little bit more. We're trying to decide what's best for him and the club."
